Dr.
Buch brings executive experience in academic, government, NGO and
global health environments to health workforce issues as well as more
general
topics related to public health and health systems development. He has
an active record in research, education and community service. Over the
past decade he has applied his expertise in Human Resources for Health
at the continental as well as global level.
Dr.
Eric Buch is a medical doctor and a registered specialist in Community
Medicine. Prior to his current appointment as Dean of the Faculty
of Health Sciences, he was Professor of Health Policy and Management in
the School of Health Systems and Public Health at the University of
Pretoria. He serves as Health Adviser to the New Partnership for
Africa’s Development (NEPAD) and is a founding member
of the Board of the Global Health Workforce Alliance.
Dr. Mvuyo Tom is a family
medicine physician and has been Vice Chancellor of the University of Fort Hare
since 2007. He has served in a number of
senior health positions, including Principal Medical Officer at the Soweto
Community Health Centres and Baragwanath Hospital in Gauteng and Senior Medical
Officer at Umtata General Hospital in the Eastern Cape. After the election of Nelson Mandela as
President of South Africa, he entered government service, first as Strategic
Manager and then as Permanent Secretary for the Department of Health and Welfare
in the Eastern Cape. In 1997, he was
appointed Director-General of the Eastern Cape, the highest level civil servant
in the province. Dr. Tom is an active
member of civil society organizations and has served as a member of South African
forums and committees. He is a recipient
of the Kaiser Family Foundation Nelson Mandela Award for Health and Human
Rights.
